— What is GST registration —

When you must register, and why it helps even if you don't have to.

GST registration is mandatory if your turnover crosses ₹40 lakh for goods (₹20 lakh in special-category states) or ₹20 lakh for services (₹10 lakh in special states). It's also mandatory if you sell across state lines, sell online through marketplaces like Amazon or Flipkart, or pay tax under the reverse charge mechanism.

Even if you're below the threshold, voluntary registration helps you claim input tax credit on raw materials and services, look more credible to B2B buyers, and avoid the scramble when you cross the limit mid-year. The cost is low; the benefits compound.

One word of caution: once registered, you must file monthly returns even if there's zero turnover. Skipping returns triggers ₹50/day penalty plus 18% interest. We bundle filing support to keep you safe.

— FAQ —

Things businesses always ask.

Do I have to register for GST?

Mandatory if: turnover crosses ₹40L (goods) or ₹20L (services); you sell across state lines; you sell online through marketplaces; you pay tax under reverse charge; or you're a casual taxable person. Special-category states (NE states, J&K, Himachal, Uttarakhand) have lower thresholds. If you're not sure where you stand, talk to us before deciding.

How long does GST registration take?

3–7 working days in most states once we file. Some states do physical address verification which can stretch it to 10–14 days. We give you ARN within 24 hours so you can track progress on the GSTN portal yourself.

What is the difference between regular and composition scheme?

Regular: standard GST rates (5%, 12%, 18%, 28%), you collect tax from customers, claim full input credit, file monthly. Composition: flat 1% (traders), 5% (restaurants), or 6% (services up to ₹50L) on turnover, no input credit, quarterly filing. Composition is simpler but you can't sell across states, can't sell online, and B2B customers can't claim credit. We help you pick.

Can I get GST registration without a current account?

Initially, yes — you can register with your savings account if you're a proprietor. But for regular operations, especially if you're a company, GST officers prefer a current account. We recommend opening one within 30 days of GSTIN issuance.

What happens if I don't register but cross the threshold?

Heavy penalties. Tax department can charge the entire GST you should have collected (typically 18% of turnover above threshold) plus 10% penalty plus interest at 18% per annum. They also have powers to seize goods. Get registered the month you suspect you'll cross — it's much cheaper.

Do I need separate GST registration for each state?

Yes, if you have a physical place of business in multiple states. Each state needs its own GSTIN, even though they share the same PAN. Online sellers using Amazon/Flipkart fulfilment centres often need multi-state registration — we handle these as a bulk package at a discount.

What if my GST application is rejected?

About 30% of applications filed by non-experts get rejected — usually for document mismatches or wrong HSN codes. If rejected, you can refile after fixing the issue. If we file and the rejection is due to our error, we refile free. If it's due to incorrect information you provided, we refile at 50% of fees.

After getting GSTIN, what filings do I need to do?

Regular scheme: GSTR-1 (sales) monthly by 11th, GSTR-3B (summary + tax payment) monthly by 20th, GSTR-9 (annual return) by Dec 31. Even with zero turnover you must file nil returns. Composition scheme: just CMP-08 quarterly + annual GSTR-4. Our ₹11,999 annual plan handles all of this.
